The Needle Valve controls the flow of fuel into the float chamber and shuts off when the float reaches the correct height. Original versions were a brass body and used a steel needle.

These were replaced in the 70's by the current brass needle with a Viton tip which is far superior to any other type on the market including the double ball type.
